The other day everyone tweeted the same thing…

Yeah that was weird.

So the other day I read on TechCrunch that everyone on Twitter was tweeting the same line of text with some minor alterations, most likely due to the similar effects of the game telephone, but nonetheless tweeting the same thing: “Sometimes I Just Want To Copy Someone Else’s Status, Word For Word, And See If They Notice” I found this silly yet curious. I joined in and further watched the tweets flow in. By the time you read this I doubt they will be flowing the way they did weeks ago. I am actually surprised that there are still a few coming in today. In August there were about 5 a second. It was an interesting phenomenon.

This event just got me thinking of the power of people’s online commentary. What if these people were all repeating a line about how awesome your company is?… or worse how awful your company is… As I watched people continue to promote this one line, it was like watching the mob mentality take effect. I thought it was fascinating, but at the same time it made me feel slightly uneasy. They did not stop. All day every second more of the same tweet would go out. I am not quite sure when they slowed, but wow. It was as if we were all connecting with this one line even though it ultimately meant nothing. So in summary I was impressed and I hope that in the future tweeps can join together and say something meaningful. It has happened in the past… and not only with that instance. Keep talking everyone.
